Prelexically-driven perceptual retuning of phoneme boundaries

چکیده
Listeners heard an ambiguous /f-s/ in nonword contexts where only one of /f/ or /s/ was legal (e.g., frul/*srul or *fnud/snud). In later categorisation of a phonetic continuum from /f/ to /s/, their category boundaries had shifted; hearing -rul led to expanded /f/ categories, -nud expanded /s/. Thus phonotactic sequence information alone induces perceptual retuning of phoneme category boundaries; lexical access is not required.

Phonological Abstraction in the Mental Lexicon
A perceptual learning experiment provides evidence that the mental lexicon cannot consist solely of detailed acoustic traces of recognition episodes. In a training lexical decision phase, listeners heard an ambiguous [f-s] fricative sound, replacing either [f] or [s] in words. In a test phase, listeners then made lexical decisions to visual targets following auditory primes. Critical materials ...
متن کاملListeners retune phoneme categories across languages.
Native listeners adapt to noncanonically produced speech by retuning phoneme boundaries by means of lexical knowledge. We asked whether a second language lexicon can also guide category retuning and whether perceptual learning transfers from a second language (L2) to the native language (L1). During a Dutch lexical-decision task, German and Dutch listeners were exposed to unusual pronunciation ...
متن کاملComparing lexically guided perceptual learning in younger and older listeners.
Numerous studies have shown that younger adults engage in lexically guided perceptual learning in speech perception. Here, we investigated whether older listeners are also able to retune their phonetic category boundaries. More specifically, in this research we tried to answer two questions. First, do older adults show perceptual-learning effects of similar size to those of younger adults? Seco...
متن کاملPhoneme category retuning in a non-native language
Previous studies have demonstrated that native listeners modify their interpretation of a speech sound when a talker produces an ambiguous sound in order to quickly tune into a speaker, but there is hardly any evidence that non-native listeners employ a similar mechanism when encountering ambiguous pronunciations. So far, one study demonstrated this lexically-guided perceptual learning effect f...
متن کاملPerceptual retuning targets features
Introduction Previous work has shown that listeners systematically “retune” their categorical boundaries when presented with real-word tokens containing an ambiguous segment. There have been multiple previous studies on this lexically-guided retuning (Jesse and McQueen 2011; McQueen et al. 2006; Norris et al. 2003), but most work thus far has assumed that the retuning is at the level of the seg...
